Overview
The Black Hills Back Country Byway is a 21-mile unpaved route managed by the Bureau of Land Management between Safford and Clifton. BLM classifies it as a Type II byway suited to high-clearance vehicles; the road is mostly native soil and gravel, with narrow drop-offs and steep cliffside sections. Stops and nearby attractions include Canyon Overlook Picnic Area, the Black Hills Rockhound Area, Owl Creek Campground, the Gila River boat put-in and views into the Gila Box Riparian National Conservation Area. BLM advises checking weather and road conditions, carrying plenty of water and fuel, and avoiding the route in oversized vehicles.

Access Notes
Both ends are reached from US 191 between Safford and Clifton. The south entrance is near milepost 139 and the north entrance near milepost 160. BLM advises vehicles over 20 feet long, including travel trailers and motorhomes, not to attempt the route.
