A rugged 21-mile BLM back-country byway between Safford and Clifton, offering Old West history, Gila River overlooks, rockhounding, camping and primitive-road scenery.

BLM campground with 7 sites (3 pull-through, 4 pull-in) within the Gila Box Riparian NCA, overlooking the historic Old Safford Bridge and Gila River. Vault restrooms, picnic tables, grills, ramadas; no potable water. Site 1 is ADA-accessible. A 0.25-mile trail connects to the Old Safford Bridge Picnic Area and Gila River Boat Put-In.

BLM day-use river access point on the Gila River for kayaking, rafting, canoeing, pack rafting, tubing and swimming. Vault toilet, picnic table, grill, trash receptacle and information kiosk; commercial guides run multi-day float trips from here with dispersed riverbank camping downstream. Dry Canyon Boat Take-Out is 23 miles downstream.

23,000-acre BLM riparian conservation area along the Gila River and its tributaries, straddling Greenlee and Graham counties. Includes Riverview Campground (13 units, potable water) and Owl Creek Campground (7 units) as developed sites, plus primitive camping and multiple river float points.

A 0.6-0.7 mile round-trip trail (about 300 ft of elevation gain, steep switchbacks, ~30 minutes round trip) at the south end of Clifton leading to a veterans memorial with roughly 2,000 replica dog tags on wire cables and plaques honoring Greenlee County service members killed or missing in action. Built and maintained by veterans and community volunteers around 2015-2016. The summit has a sweeping view of Clifton, about 300 ft above town.

A free, self-guided public overlook along US-191 (the Coronado Trail) through the Morenci open-pit copper mine, maintained by Freeport-McMoRan. Visitor accounts describe an elevated lookout over part of the pit, a retired mine haul-truck bed reachable by stairs, a displayed truck engine and tire, and interpretive panels on mine history and copper production; bighorn sheep are commonly seen nearby. This is separate from guided bus mine tours, whose current operating status is unconfirmed (some sources describe them as discontinued for safety reasons).

A remote recreation corridor along the Blue River and Blue Range, with river access, rustic camping, hiking and backcountry trailheads in some of eastern Arizona’s wildest country.

A small, primitive Forest Service campground along the Coronado Trail north of Clifton, offering a quiet high-country stop among forested mountain terrain.
